Exploring the hidden defenders of the sky: Ritam presented at FEMS Micro in Milan

Ritam presented his recent work on defence systems in the genomes of cloudwater bacteria at the recent FEMS Micro Congress from 14-17 July 2025 in Milan, Italy.

Clouds contain microorganisms that live in the high-altitude, low-nutrient, and UV-exposed environments of Earth’s atmosphere. By analyzing how these tiny organisms protect themselves against genetic threats like phages and foreign DNA, Ritam's work opens a window into how microbial life adapts to survive in some of the most extreme and transient habitats on the planet. The presentation sparked engaging discussions on the broader role of atmospheric microbiomes in global ecosystems. It was a proud moment to share this work with the international microbiology community and a step forward in understanding the invisible but vital life above our heads.
